Grass Fed Beef

Meat and Meat Products.

None of us our perfect and in effort to feed our families nutritious meals that taste good while at the same-time requiring very little or no effort the food industry has come to the rescue for us with fast easy convenient options. However, at some point we need to be accountable and educate ourselves.

I shall share a story with you. I was hosting a pancake breakfast for my youngest and my husband suggested for the adults peameal bacon on a bun sandwiches for the parents. Off to a major grocery store chain to purchase many of the staples I needed for the big day. While at this store, that will remain nameless I went to the butcher section and asked for peameal bacon. The butcher took me over to the meat dept. and showed me the package containing the slices of the bacon. I explained to him I wanted to buy real peameal bacon not this stuff. He told me that is the way to grocery store sells it. Oh, I said, I will go to the butcher shop were I knew I should have gone in the 1st place but before leaving I asked him "so where does it come from?" He told me the "States" from Kentucky, Texas, Arizona, wherever the can buy it the cheapest. Oh, wow, but it is called Canadian Back Bacon and you can't buy it in the States. I was compelled to ask him where does the rest of the meat come from then? He told me also from the "States" unless it states it is labelled from Canada. I was mighty confused by this because the store I was in takes pride in promoting and advertising the are a Canadian store carrying much of our Canadian products especially, the ones we produce here. Needless to say, whenever, if ever, I was planning on making a roast dinner for my family the only place I would purchase meat products would be a butcher supplying local meat. So off to the butcher I went to buy real Canadian Back Bacon.

Hence, my quest to find quality meat products for my family. The 3 sons of mine have made it clear on several occasion's they do not want to be vegetarians. I want to be able to feed them the best I can with nutritious sources of food and luckily I was introduced to a family that produces grass fed beef, Finley View Farms.

I have been purchasing their beef for a couple of years now and will continue to do so. It does cook and taste differently but it is a heck of alot better then the pink slime version sold at all major grocery stores and I don't have to worry about all the containment's.

Here is some revelant information about grass fed beef  I would like to share with you.

What is Grass Fed Beef?

The natural diet of ruminant animals such as cattle, sheep, goat, or bison is forage or grass.  In the 1800s and early 1900s most cattle were raised completely on grass.  Over the years, commercial beef production has changed.
Today, while most cattle are still raised on grass or pasture for the first months of their lives, the vast majority of them are then transported to distant feedlots where they are "finished" on a grain-based diet. Typically, the cattle are fed a variety of drugs and feed additives to speed their production and to minimize the health problems that come from eating an artificial diet and living in stressful, crowded conditions. This is the type of beef that you find in virtually all grocery stores and restaurants.
Grass fed beef is from cattle which live the entire summer on pasture, free to roam and graze as they please. They are given no grain or corn, and no hormones or additives are used to promote extra growth.   Other terms for grass fed may include "pasture-raised", or "grass raised".
